When things aren't feeling so good...

Photo Cred: Peter Crosby

A little over a month ago, I posted this pic along with a confession: For a long time, I've been living with anxiety and depression (aka A&D). It was a bit moment of vulnerability for me to admit out loud, to the world (on Instagram, no less) because it's been such a private thing for me. For as long as I can remember, A&D have been a part of my life and so has therapy. I can remember my first therapy session back in middle school with the school's social worker. It's been a long journey and about five years ago, I met my current therapist at the National Institute for Psychotherapies. Therapy and my therapist are such an important part of my life.

A&D are a part of my life. Some days the stars align and I feel great and optimistic about everything. Other days, one star will be off-kilter and A&D is harder to shake. I was listening to Trevor Noah talk about his own depression on the podcast Death, Sex & Money and he said that "one of the weirdest triggers for me, if I have an extremely productive day, I've got to be very careful because the next day I might be depressed". The biggest lightbulb went off in my head! I so relate and ever since, I've been making a conscious effort to be mindful of this trigger in me.

Since posting on Instagram about my A&D, I've heard from and have had conversations with so many friends that want to hear more about my experiences with therapy and how to go about finding a therapist. Never once did I think that sharing something so private would help someone on their own journey. The thing is, we spend so much time in our cocoons dealing with our own thoughts alone because we believe that we're the only ones going through what we're going through. But what I learned from listening from Trevor and since sharing my A&D with others, is that we're not the only ones and we don't have to be alone in our cocoons.

If you want to know more about my experiences with therapy, feel free to reach out!

Fearlessly Dreaming,

Ana

Sidenote...I listen to a lot of podcasts so this is a fair warning that I will be quoting/mentioning podcasts a lot! lol
